UnAmerican Activities is a poetry reading series held simultaneously in New York and Cambridge. The series aims to activate and accentuate transAtlantic crosspollination, bringing new audiences and readers into contact and extending the range of their activities.

Readers will reach audiences on the other side of the Atlantic via live audio link. In the interval between readings, live video portals will be opened in both venues so Cambridge and New York audiences can engage in dialogue across the geographical distance.

For this first event in the series, Peter Larkin will read in Cambridge and Lanny Jordan Jackson will read in New York.

Recordings of the readings will be hosted on Archive of the Now.

MAGGIE O’SULLIVAN’S publications include ‘In the House of the Shaman’ (Reality Street, 1993), ‘eXcLa’ with Bruce Andrews (Writers Forum, 1993), ‘Body of Work’ (Reality Street, 2006), most recently ‘murmur’ (Veer, 2011) and a new edition in 2012 of ‘Waterfalls’ (etruscan, 2009); she edited the major anthology ‘Out of Everywhere: Linguistically Innovative Poetry by Women In North America and The UK’ (Reality Street, 1996). Performing her work internationally since the 1970s, O’Sullivan has established herself of one of the UK’s most significant and compelling innovative writers, artists and performers. REDELL OLSEN’S publications include ‘Secure Portable Space’ (Reality Street, 2004), ‘S p r i g s & spots’ (Wide Range, 2012) and ‘Punk Faun’ (subpress, 2012). Her mixed-media and performance works include the film for live performance ‘a newe booke of copies’ (2009-10) and ‘The Lost Swimming Pool’ (London, June 2010), a site-specific installation and performance (for Esther Williams and the Lost Olympics; and for Jane Holloway and Elizabeth Jesser Reid). From 2001-2010 Olsen edited the online journal How(2) and she regularly publishes critical work on contemporary poetics. CAITLÍN DOHERTY has read in Brighton, London and Cambridge at different times and for different reasons. Her work has been published in HiZero, Friends, Half Circle, and by Foule Press. ROWAN EVANS’S work has been published in Half Circle, Aviary, The Mays and in the Contingencies anthology (Contingency Press, 2012). For those in touching or striking distance of Cambridge & its environs, this Saturday there will be an evening of poetry, music & film at Newnham Old Labs (Newnham College, Sidgwick Avenue, Cambridge, CB3 9DF). Music from the trio of Dominic Lash (bass) Alex Ward (clarinet, electric guitar) Dag Erik Knedal Andersen (drums); Poetry by the late Jeff Keen, read by various, incl. Ian Heames, Lisa Jeschke, & Mike Wallace-Hadrill; and Films, also by Keen, projected. The trio are on a UK mini-tour, & will play two sets. The event begins at 8pm. Copies of the Keen pamphlets recently published by c_c press will be on sale.

On Sunday, 27 November there will be a program of music, talks and poetry from 6:30pm, at Lady Mitchell Hall, on the Sidgwick Site at the University of Cambridge, which is presently occupied by the student-group Cambridge Defend Education, in protest of the government white paper on higher education. Events include the “Songs in the Dark” open-mic, a talk by veteran revolutionary Selma James, a reading by Cambridge poet J.H. Prynne, and more. All are invited to attend the event, in solidarity with the occupiers and the cause for which they are fighting. This event marks the beginning of John Kinsella’s residence as Judith E
Wilson Visiting Poetry Fellow.

John Kinsella is a highly distinguished Australian poet, who has written
over 20 books of poetry, as well as plays and fiction. His recent books
include ‘The New Arcadia’ (2005); Shades of the Sublime & Beautiful
(2008); Divine Comedy: Journeys Through a Regional Geography (2010); and
‘Activist Poetics: Anarchy in the Avon Valley’ ( 2010).

Sophie Mayer’s latest collection is The Private Parts of Girls (Salt,
2011). She is the author of ‘The Cinema of Sally Potter: A Politics of
Love’ (2009) and a regular contributor to Sight & Sound.

Drew Milne’s book’s of poetry include ‘The Damage: new and selected
poems’ (2001), ‘Mars Disarmed’ (2002) and ‘Go Figure’ (2003).
